Since 1965, Raiss
El Fenni Mohamed has lived and worked in
the Kasbah of Tangier, Morocco on the tip of North Africa, looking
across the Straits of Gibraltar to Europe only a few miles away. From
this point, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and where two
Continents, with such different histories and heritages, almost
touch, Raiss El Fenni
has digested these various influences- Moslem Arab, African and
Occidental  in a uniquely personal way.
Born in Fez, The artistic and intellectual
Capital of Morocco, Raiss El Fenni Mohamed began painting at an early age,
although he has had no formal training. His years spent dyeing
fabrics have helped him develop his keen sense of color and his
sensitivity to different surfaces. His works blend the light of the
Mediterranean with the solid earth hues of the African soil into a
whirlwind of a dream world: a whirlwind that voraciously sweeps up
pieces of the ArtistÂs experience, whole or fragmentary, rearranging
them in layers that peel away, exposing a fantastic fantasy of feel,
smell and light.
His paintings are to be found in
collections in Morocco, Europe, Australia, Venezuela, Canada and the
United States of America.
In addition to his painting, Raiss El Fenni also
designs clothing and textiles.
